Mae Young Classic Episode 8: The Best of the Best

Episode Eight: The Best Of The Best

From 32 of the very best, we’ve narrowed it down to just four extremely talented women: Toni Storm, Kairi Sane, Mercedes Martinez and Shayna Baszler.

Match One: Shayna Baszler versus Mercedes Martinez

Mercedes and Shayna, teacher versus student, this would be an interesting one. Shayna had been dominating the entire tournament, but this could be Mercedes moment. If you ask me, it should have been Mercedes moment.

For the first time in the tournament, Shayna gave a handshake to Mercedes, to a rousing chant of “Trifecta” (the independent stable they are both apart of). Once respect was established, friendship was out the window. This was going to be Mercedes’ time, her moment.]

Out of all the matches Shayna has had so far, Mercedes was her toughest opponent and took her to the brink. Right out of the gate Mercedes was going for takedowns, no one had done that to Shayna yet. Mercedes was in control, strikes getting Shayna backed into a corner; this was Mercedes using her veteran skills to her advantage. Even though Mercedes was in control, and had the crowd support, Shayna still pulled off the win catching Mercedes in the rear naked choke for the win.

Match Two: Toni Storm versus Kairi Sane

We’ve established that Kairi is the huge sensation out of this tournament, being everything she was hyped to be and more. Toni Storm: world traveled, complete badass rockstar, and strong as hell.

Kairi is smaller, as she has been in all her match ups, but Toni is the scariest match up she has had. We started out with a pretty in control match, Kairi and Toni trading blows and pin attempts, but of course in control matches don’t always stay that way. Kairi ended up outside the ring, after Toni Storm moved out of the way. Toni went for a dive, but scouted Kairi coming in for a hit and wound up staying on the apron. Kairi eventually tripped up Toni, and went for a cross body. The move caused a bit of an injury for both as Kairi landed pretty hard on the ramp. Quickly got Toni back in the ring for a pin attempt, but a kick out at two.

Of course Toni wouldn’t go down lightly, even after a submission attempt by Kairi, Toni would use her signature hip attacks to try and swing momentum back in her favor. It was short lasting as Kairi hit a massive spear.

One of Toni’s best moments of the match was getting Kairi caught in a massive armbar; Toni put a lot of torque on Kairi’s arm. But amazingly, Kairi did not tapout. This match honestly could have been the finals, this was an amazing performance by both women.

Winner by elbow drop: Kairi Sane

I'm more awesome than the Miz and like to think I'm a cupcake like Candice LeRae (she's way cooler than I am).British Wrestling stole my heart and I don't think I'll ever get it back. I blame British Strong Style, probably.
