2019 PW Awards: Babyface of the Year

Welcome to the world of professional wrestling, where most folks in the business will tell you that it’s much harder to get over as a babyface as opposed to being the heel. Getting the fans to admire you is one thing — maintaining it is another. Here are the folks that were able to rise above the rest of the competition in their respective field during the calendar year of 2019.

Winner: Cody

When it comes to betting on yourself and leaving “New York” for greener pastures, Cody has officially written the script for the modern era.

There is no argument that the Rhodes family is and will always be pro wrestling royalty. Virgil Riley Runnels Jr. has to be beyond proud of what his son is giving to this business day in and day out. If AEW does survive through the next 5-10 years and beyond, Cody will be their version of Triple H.

In 2019, Cody was the best babyface of the year because no one playing said part understood the business better than he does. It’s quite simple — Cody is good enough to get exactly he wants out of you as a fan. He’s the glue that is holding AEW together in their infant stages. His music hit and you popped. His mic got turned on and you listened. This is someone that you can believe in not only this year, but for years to come.

Cody is our 2019 Face of the Year and it’s not up for argument. And you will eat up every second of it because he’s just that good.

Runner Up: Nick Gage

Nick Gage isn’t your traditional babyface. Imagine GG Allin if he knew how to do a chokebreaker. I have a feeling that if Nick Gage were to defecate in the middle of the ring — the fans may just pop for him. That’s how over he is right now.

Honorable Mentions: Kento Miyahara, Kota Ibushi, Becky Lynch, Hiroshi Tanahashi

Dave has been covering Pro Wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts for various websites since 2010. He currently runs both FightBooth and WrestlingDesk with the help of some lovely and talented people.
